The Evolution of Coffee: From Luigi Bezzera to the Modern Experience with Shopify and Starbucks ☕🌍
The Industry That Made Starting the Day Feel Different

Preparing a cup of coffee today is so routine
that we rarely stop to think that none of this would be possible without Luigi Bezzera — an Italian engineer who, at the end of the 19th century, created the very first espresso machine, using steam and pressure to speed up extraction. In Italy
, this innovation completely transformed coffee culture and paved the way for brands like De’Longhi, which since 1902 has combined Italian design with advanced technology to offer everything from manual machines to automatic espresso makers, making the espresso experience accessible and part of everyday life.
In France, in 1802, the first coffee maker appeared — designed by pharmacist François Antoine and called the Caféolette. Decades later in Switzerland, Nespresso reinvented home coffee-making with its capsule system, bringing quality and variety to the touch of a single button (although it’s not my favorite method). Making a cup today feels simple, but behind every sip there are centuries of evolution and refinement.
Coffee has powered major empires and nations such as Colombia, Ethiopia, and Brazil — and now Mexico joins this tradition. Behind every coffee machine lies a complex chain: farmers who plant, grow, and harvest the beans, and companies that import, export, roast, manufacture, and distribute the final product. This process has enabled modern brands like Starbucks, Nespresso, De’Longhi, and Cielito Café to build global empires rooted in consumption, culture, technology, and well-being.
The Breville Bambino is one of my favorite entry-level espresso machines . Not just because of its design or how easy it makes preparing a great cup of coffee, but because it represents everything I love about a good coffee machine: simplicity, control, and speed.
